This has been a problem with at least Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and 10. BTW, this is not just related to Windows Server 2016. I'll bet hundreds if not thousands of people get this error message every day, and probably just end up either leaving the abandoned file/folder there, or rebooting to solve the problem.Įither fix the API's that are keeping the handle open after the dialog is closed, or fix the error message dialog to show the user which applications are using that folder. I know that the handle is held open so that the next time you open that dialog, the same path will be navigated to, but if that path is no longer valid, just open to that folder's next available parent directory, or even just that drive's root directory. The API should just save the path in a variable and let go of the handle. Even after that dialog has closed, I think the API should release the handle that is connected to that folder. This error message seems to be triggered by any application that has navigated to the folder in question, usually with the File - Open/Save/Save As dialog. Since the Folder In Use message is so vague and doesn't let you know what's really going on, I don't know if the same steps above will work for you, but it's worth a try. remove C:\ProgramData\Docker by invoking cmd, because microsoft powershell is struggling to delete symlinks, of which docker has many. take ownership of all docker files within C:\ProgramData\Docker. I again was able to open the file successfully. go to start > powershell > run as administrator. I then right-clicked the folder the file is in again and selected "Free up space", which caused the status icon to change back to the blue-outlined cloud for each file. Once I shortened the name of the file, I was able to open the file without a problem.
When I attempted to open the file again with this new status, I got a message indicating the file path/name is too long. Type 'Exit' and press 'Enter' to close the Windows Command Prompt utility.
You must replace 'Path to file' and 'File.dll' with the actual path to your file and file name. Type 'Regsvr32 /u /s C:\Path to file\file.dll' and press the 'Enter' key. This setting caused the status icon for all the files in the folder to become a green circle with a white checkmark. This launches the Windows Command Prompt utility. After researching what the OneDrive status icons mean (the file in question had a blue-outlined cloud, which means it's available on-line only), I right-clicked the folder the file is in and selected "Always keep on this device". I got the same error for a file I did a Save As into a different folder, but I just figured it out.
